            Artist's  Statement

"All art begins as a single idea.  The more complicated the idea becomes, the more art begins to unravel.  My art should be nothing more than a simple statement; a detail unnoticed by most, a moment, captured by my camera or the blink of my eye, or perhaps nothing more than a mood held together by the balance of color, shape, and line.  From this, no one should assume my art is simple.  A single misplaced line can make the difference between a good painting and a bad painting.  The simplicity of the initial idea belies the complexity of composition and design.  And therein lies the beauty of my work."

Biography

"Growing up on a Western Nebraska wheat farm has taken me a long way,"  says Artist, Mark Hoppmann.  Although still influenced by those early years, and having traveled extensively throughout Western Europe, his passions now lie in the Pacific Northwest.  After spending one year studying art in Florence, Italy, and graduating from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa in 1978, he moved to Tacoma, Washington in 1981.  Armed with a camera and sketchbook, he roams the Pacific Northwest coast capturing the crumbling weatherworn textures of nature in watercolor and whatever medium he has at hand.  "I consider Kalaloch and the Dungeness Spit, sculpture gardens" says the artist.  He adds, "Each of my paintings are as unique as the subjects I find.  Selling no reproductions means continuously seeking new ideas and creating new pieces for my collectors to enjoy, and that should keep me busy for a very long time."

Noting his parent's and family's support for his success, Mark resides in Tacoma, Washington with his wife Barbara, and his daughter Schuyler.  In 2005 Mark's work was published  in  Northwest Artists, a collection of art from the Northwest.  He has also had numerous one man shows in the Tacoma area, including the Tacoma Audubon Society. In 2006, ten of his works were selected for a six month show at the Columbia Tower Club in the Columbia Tower in Seattle, Washington.

Beginning in  2002, Mark became an integral part of Freighthouse Art Gallery in Tacoma, but by 2006 realized he had grown beyond it's boundaries.    Working with three other artists, Penni Russell, Janyce Suckow, and Linda Jacobus, who shared a dream , Gallery 96 became a reality in the spring of 2007.

"Everything I do is an original work of art, created from my own photographs , sketches, and imagination.  There are no reproductions, and no copies.  I prefer those who possess a work of mine, to have a Unique work of art.   My small original sketches and drawings rendered in pencil , pen & ink, or a variety of mediums,  provide greater satisfaction, while  sometimes giving insight to the paintings I create."
