Artist's Statement "All art begins as a single idea. The more complicated the idea becomes, the more art begins to unravel. My art should be nothing more than a simple statement; a detail unnoticed by most, a moment, captured by my camera or the blink of my eye, or perhaps nothing more than a mood held together by the balance of color, shape, and line. From this, no one should assume my art is simple. The simplicity of the initial idea belies the complexity of composition and design. And therein lies the beauty of my work." Mark Hoppmann 2006 |

Biography |
|
I am an artist living and working in the Pacific Northwest. Born and raised on the western plains of Nebraska, I graduated from Drake University in 1978, with a degree in graphic design/commercial art. Arriving in Puget Sound in 1981, I worked in the graphic arts industry by day and painted and drew by night. By 1999, I was finally painting, drawing, and thinking full time as an artist.
My work is the product of a mind shaped by those early years on the Great Plains, exposure to the European masters while traveling and studying art in Europe, and most importantly, by observation of the world around me. Using those sources, my mind translates to sketchbook or paper what my eyes or my camera have captured. There will always be new ways to see and translate familiar concepts, and so I have neither temptation nor reason to create reproductions of my work, making each work unique to itself and to the patron who owns it.
With that in mind, my patrons may be somewhat startled to notice I have set aside some of my original Crowz© illustrations and begun offering a limited catalog of graphic images on an assortment of products at www.cafepress.com/crowz. This is not as much a leap as it may first seem. Trained as a graphic designer, I have always maintained a delicate balance between fine art and commercial art, and many of my designs at Cafepress bear little resemblence to the original fine art Crowz© images I have created in my studio. My promise to my patrons is this: While marketing my graphic designs at Cafepress, I will continue to create original fine art images for their collections.
