                      ark Hoppmann

Working from his studio in Tacoma Washington, Mark Hoppmann Is a multi-media artist working primarily in watercolor, India ink, and graphite.  He studied art for one year in Florence, Italy, before graduating from Drake University in 1978 with a BFA in graphic design and commercial art.  An offset press operator in the graphic arts industry for twenty years, Mark returned to art full time in 1999.   Mark has exhibited his watercolor paintings and drawings in multiple galleries across the Pacific Northwest. He has self-published two illustrated handmade books;  “Thirteen Ways”, celebrating the poetry of Wallace Steven’s, Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird, and “Twelve Days”, based on The Twelve Days of Christmas.  His current project, “Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crows”, is funded partially through a Tacoma Artist Initiative Project grant from the Tacoma Arts Commission.

“All art originates from a simple idea”

  Artist's  Statement

"All art begins as a single idea.  The more complicated the idea becomes, the more art begins to unravel.  My art should be nothing more than a simple statement; a detail unnoticed by most, a moment, captured by my camera or the blink of my eye, or perhaps nothing more than a mood held together by the balance of color, shape, and line.  From this, no one should assume my art is simple.    The simplicity of the initial idea belies the complexity of composition and design.  And therein lies the beauty of my work."
